New Year’s Day started with the traditional club 10 mile time trial. This had an 11am start so not too early and it would ease the hangover in for the day. This race is usually a bit of a fun effort and myself and other members choose this year to do the race on our cross bikes.

Meeting up with a few fellow wheelers we rode up to the start, raced and rode home getting in around 55 miles. My time for the TT was 25.51 and I came 4th, not bad for using a cross bike!

I booked a place in my 1st triathlon for 2011 this month, East Grinstead in April so I was conscious to get back running and swimming again. I managed 3 visits to the pool and a total of 50 miles running. More focus on the running and just getting my stroke back in the pool. I was lucky enough to have a car for nearly 2 weeks so the commuting miles were put on the back burner which enabled me to train in other disciplines.

Cycling covered just slightly more than last month and was around 450 miles.

There was only the one Cyclo Cross race and this took place at Wilmington School, Kent. The previous weekend cross races were taken up by National and Regional Champs and this year I had not entered any of those.

There was a smaller field at the race and it consisted of around 80 riders for Round 13 of the London League Cyclo Cross League. It was a muddy off camber course with 6 sections of wooded single track which made passing in these sections virtually impossible. I had to use both of the cross bikes I had brought and made a pit change on lap 4 due to only having the one gear useable. This gear was fine on the climbing and the wooded sections by on the longer drag I was spinning away and loosing places. I finished in 35th place which was OK for me seen as I had a big spill and cam off on the penultimate lap gashing my left calf and twisting my back. All in all a good and proper cyclo cross race.

I rounded the month off with a morning of clearing my clubs cross course for the forthcoming hosting of the London League Team Champs on the 13th Feb and a 40 miler out to Newhaven and back via Ditchling Beacon. This was a hilly, windy drag of a ride but good training non the less.
