The boys are back from setting out the course and it’s all up. There were three of them out there today putting up the route in sections but Mark was also out for a jolly and did the whole route. He’s now in the bath soaking his legs, but before he disappeared I had a word. We warm you up with a long flat section before the climbs start and Mark said he was wondering what the fuss was about, then he rode into Malham
Here we climb to the west of the cove up a steep road with a few hairpins. Both Mark and Keith said they quite enjoyed the challenge and the top opens you up to fantastic views and the start of the real Pennine countryside. From here to the drinkstation in Kettlewell is miles on remote, scenic tarmac which Keith described as ” what road bikes where built for” After Kettlewell the Full route heads over Fleet Moss which is the highest road in Yorkshire and then a long, steep descent into Gayle ( Picture above) Mark managed 47mph down here with a crosswind ( I did 48mph earlier in the year) but did say he was on the brakes as he didn’t want to get blown off. Up until this point he had had a tailwind and this was about to show itself as he turned into it for the return journey. This really kicked in on the climb up Coverdale which is 9miles up hill! A fast descent with a hairpin and it’s back into Kettlewell for the third drinkstation stop. From here it’s all pretty good running until the final sting in the tail over Barden Moor and into Skipton. Mark’s ride time was 6 hours 40 minutes with an average of 15mph so that should give you an idea of what to expect ( He said he would have done 6hours without the wind )

Hi James.
Yep, it’s going to be a great ride.
We are coming to Thirsk towards the end of the year so look at the Ride It! page on the website, accessed via the little tab at the top of the main Evans page.

Hi all,
Is this a road bike only ride?? Will me & my hybrid mountain bike be ok or will we stick out like a sore thumb??? my first sportive thats all, hoping for a good experience.
cheers,
Gav
Is there going to be a gpx file available for download?
Hi Gav.
You might be in the minority but it’s not a problem to ride on a Hybrid.
David
I have updated the blog above to say that GPX routes will be available from here on Friday night,

Hi Chaps, Looks like you’ve uploaded the half distance GPX map twice! Any chance of the full one please?
Cheers
Both the GPX links above take you to the same half route. There is no link to the full route.
Hi Mark.
Typically I only checked the half route to make sure the links were working!
Full route is now linked.

Hi…Anyone got the total climbing numbers for this route ?
My Garmin recorded it at just under 9k ft.
Hi Craig
Total climbing was about 11,000 feet

My Garmin recorded 3053 metres so just over 10,000ft. If I turn on elevation corrections it comes out a bit lower at just under 9,000ft. Whatever the exact figure it certainly felt like a lot!
Thanks guys….knew it was lot…great course, very testing roll on next year !
Hi Guys.
Our elevation figures come from our mapping software and is calculated between waypoints. If we cut off a corner ( which we will do on such a long route otherwise you’ll end up with 1000′s of waypoints and gps units will struggle to cope) then the line between these might go down a bit and then back up adding to the elevation. Reading that, it’s easier to give an example although this is an extreme case to illustrate the point. Lets say you have a road that is perfectly level at 1000mtrs and it has a 180degree hairpin on it. The reason for this hairpin is a 500mtr deep hole. If you plot a route around this and cut the corner, the line between the points will descend the 500mtrs and then ascend 500mtrs giving you a total climb of 500mtrs. If you rode around the road with a GPS it would show 0mtrs. This will probably account for the discrepancies.
We had to change part of the top loop due to a closed road race. Hopefully next year we’ll be able to reinstate this which will give us a harder route than this year with an option to wimp out of these two addition climbs
Get training.
Cheers
Dean
Thanks everyone for a great day! My Garmin came in at 7900 ft, Really pleased that it was closer to 10-11! Loved the twist at the end eg the last climb, oh the pain…. C u all next year!
Great ride guys, well organised and 3 feeds was fantastic. Signage v good – I like the idea of a confirmation arrow after the junction (I misread a sign at the Polka Dot this year and got lost). Only slight neg is that perhaps signs before junction a bit small in places when you’re motoring a bit (I have 20/20 vision btw!). Other than that excellent, have recommended already.
Any chance of the results as an .xls file, a bit easier to sort out for placings for us keenies!
Hi Mark
I had planned a harder route ( with an optional opt out) but there was a closed road so had to change to this one. Next year it should be back on!
Glad you liked the final climb, I was told by some of my drivers that people where literally crawling up it
Mike, thanks. We tend to put out lots of smaller signs rather than one big one. This has the added advantage that if someone does remove a sign then there are hopefully a few more around to keep you on the route. Point taken about the pre-arrows on fast sections.
Richard
We will be sending a mail to everyone today with a link through to the times in an excel format, which can also be found shortly on the Rider Times section of the Ride It page on our main web page. We post them up here first as the Ride It team have access to the blog and can get them up quickly whereas the main site needs to be done at Head office and takes a little longer.
Cheers
Dean
I dont know if its possible, but it might be worth looking for something you can staple the way markers to, reason i say this is that the Turn left sign at Buckden had been turned to show straight ahead…fortunately we were at that point well up front and stopped to turn it back, i know one guy had gone straight on and was heading for a massive short cut missing out Fleet Moss !
It had been turned by someone without a doubt
