A few weeks back, on a Tuesday morning, I waited patiently at the back of the van, to see if my new race steed was about to grace sunny Manchester, and there she was, Sparky! There you go, I have named her already, Sparky is my new 2010 Scott Spark 30! So far, I have had 2 race on 1 “social” ride Sparky, and I’m smitten.
The first thing I did with her, was fit a few home comforts, more like race essentials for racing! first in was a Stans No-tubes kit, a Fizik Tundra saddle, and some Oz-riders foam grips. I can’t remember the last time I punctured using Stans, I dare not use a bike without it anymore! The Tundra, is by far the most comfortable saddle I have used, it fits me so well, and the grips are proving to be awesome on the few rides I have done with them.
After doing the Bupa Manchester 10km run, I had very little in the tank for Sparky’s first outing, which happened to be the 2nd round of the Nutcracker race series. 19th place in the sport class was a Little disappointing, but considering the new bike, and tired legs, wasn’t to bad. A great course helped me evaluate Sparky, and what changes I wanted to experiment with, which by the end, was only suspension and riding position. As a SRAM man through and through, it’s been ages since I used anything Shimano, and I have to say, I am really impressed with the shimano SLX groupset, so smooth with effortless shifting, and the Avid Elixrs, were awesome, so powerful! The Twinlock system on the Spary, worked flawlessly, and linked to the Rockshox Reba SL fork, is a racers dream. I decided to lower the travel on the Reba from 120mm to 100mm, and fit some Bontrager Race x lite bars and some Scott Stix bar ends, for a lower racier position, for my next race, Round 1 of the Brownbacks series at Lee Quarry.
This is a local series for me, and I am friends with the organizers, who do such a good job, and the course is always a challenge. The race itself, was an improvement on last week, I felt stronger (ish..), I think I’m getting fitter, and the bike is definitely making me faster!
A weekend in Ibiza on a Stage do is interrupting my training, but fingers crossed, I can continue to get fitter and faster, the more I ride the Spark, and achieve my goal, thank you Evans Cycles for lending it to me!
