August saw a welcome return to Triathlon with a Half Ironman at the end of the month with the Mid Sussex Triathlon Club. Racing continued in Time Trials with the Anerly BC 50, a club 14.5 Hilly and the end of season club Hill Climb.

There was also more swimming, running and some Cyclo Cross training ready for the London League Cyclo Cross Season 2010-11, along with the usual commute mileage.

The Anerly BC 50 mile time trial was on my local course (G50/53) as I attempted to stay under the 2 hour mark. Having achieved this before I knew this was within me. My start time was early and it proved too be a little windy with me posting a time of 2:00:51. I was pleased with that considering the weather. I also picked up £8 for being part of the 2nd fastest team, so that covered the entry fee!

I felt fit for the Crawley Wheelers Hilly 14.5 Time Trial with a winning time of 35:20, knocking over a minute of my previous personal best. The route takes in the back roads of Rusper and Newdigate.

The end of season club hill climb is always a lung buster and having not done this for a couple of years I knew it would be painful. I managed 5th in a time of 6:54.

The real crescendo of the month came with the Mid Sussex Inaugural Middle Distance Triathlon.

This was a club based competition based around Ardingly in Sussex. I had started swim and run training again only a couple of weeks before the tri. We had a total of 30 members take part with a few working as relay teams as well as most of us attempting the full distance.

The swim was in Ardingly reservoir and was 3 out & back loops. It was then a 80 meter dash into T1. Having learnt a little from the Ironman I was better equipped and was out it what I though was a speedy time. The bike route took the tri-athletes out of Ardingly down to Lindfield and then climbed back passed Ardingly through Turners Hill, Crawley Down and up to the turn at Copthorne. We then cycled into Crawley and climbed out towards Balcombe before getting into Haywards Heath and back to Lindfield. There were 2 laps of this hilly route, 1500 meters of climbing.

T2 went well with coming off the bike quickly for the half marathon, which would be run around the side of the reservoir. This was like the swim, 3 out and back loops to the finish line. Job done!

Awesome! I really enjoyed this, much better than May’s full Ironman distance. Mainly because the run was shorter and more around the pace I could manage.
