The Big Pedal is a humongous, fantastically brilliant race from 7-25 March between hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of cycling pupils. It’s powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub. This year’s three-week-long Big Pedal is a daily stage race, a bit like the Tour de France, only it’s right here in the UK and uses Sustrans’ fantastic National Cycle Network.
The three week race follows a similar format to the Tour de France; each day is a different time trial, with different stages, from long flat sprints to hillier mountainous climbs. The more children, parents and teachers that cycle in to school on each day, the quicker time the school is awarded for each stage.
First prize for the race is an unforgettable day with ‘Team M.A.D’, including incredible displays and hands on skills workshop and two brand new Land Rover bikes. The runners up will receive either a colourful Minipod to hold eight cycles and eight scooters or three Streetpods that hold six cycles delivered and installed. The fastest school in each region will win an amazing bike workshop kit and a bicycle work stand supplied by Fisher Outdoor and Weldtite. Fisher Outdoor have also provided five cycle repair tool kits and floor pumps as prizes for schools just taking part in the final week of The Big Pedal.
The Big Pedal is open to any school within the UK, and it is free to take part. For more information and to register your school to win great prizes visit www.thebigpedal.org.uk
