In January we teamed up with Cyclosport.org to run a competition to find the Evans Super Sportiver to take part in a variety of Sportive events throughout the year and write blog reviews of the events. The prize was the loan of a Jamis Xenith Pro 2011 Road Bike worth £2,299, plus kit, petrol and event entry costs paid for the year.
We had over 300 entries which were whittled down to our worthy winner James Berresford, here’s what he had to say:
“Hi, I’m James Berresford, 32, currently residing in south London. I’m the guy on the 0717 to Woking dressed head to toe in Gore-Tex and Lycra. I have to confess straight off that I’m a bit of newcomer to Cyclosportives and a relative newcomer to ‘proper’ cycling. And I’d definitely better qualify proper cycling there as meaning cycling for cycling’s sake rather than actually being any good!
Despite being new I’ve fallen for it pretty hard. Much to the irritation of many around me the majority of my conversation, spare time and daydreaming suddenly seems to revolve around the bike. I started doing a few sportives in the second half of last year initially (controversially?) looking to improve the bike leg of my triathlon, another recent addiction of mine. Despite a couple of growth experiences, read: sideways rain, 5 punctures, walking what seemed like miles in cleats, I enjoyed every minute and was immediately hooked and disappointed when the season came to a close. At the end of the year I was looking for a suitable outlet for my new found love in 2011 and with its historic associations, amazing scenery and wince inducing profile the L’etape du tour Act 1 in July seemed to perfectly fit the bill. I signed up with my similarly masochistic mate Henry.
So, in January whilst recovering from the Christmas excess and staring longingly out the window at the icy roads I sat planning my calendar of UK Sportives and with a well timed tweet the Cyclosport and Evans Cycles competition looked as though it was custom made for me. Of course I didn’t think there was the slightest chance I was going to win it, but it was worth the effort just for the daydream potential. Well, it turns out I was wrong and I can’t tell you how happy I am about that. I’m incredibly grateful for Cyclosport and Evans Cycles for this opportunity. It’s going to be a massive help to my cycling season and hope I can give something back by giving some hopefully useful feedback on the upcoming events.
All the best for 2011, I can’t wait to get started.”
James picked up the Jamis from our Wandworth store last night and unable to wait to get out on the road has kicked off his Super Sportiver season with the RideIt! Milton Keynes this weekend!
James will be reporting on a variety of Sportive events throughout the year, including the Cheshire Cat, the Fred Whitton Challenge, the RideIt! King of the Downs, the Dragon Ride and the L’etape du tour Act1 - he’s certainly taking up the challenge!
Good luck James, we look forward to reading your blogs.
