When Frederick W Evans designed his first bicycle way back in 1921, his aim was to create forward-thinking framesets and products for UK cyclists. By the mid-Thirties he held patents for innovative frame designs as well as the CTC Silver Plaque award for his patented dropout design. Now in 2011, we find ourselves looking back at our history to celebrate 90 years of Evans Cycles servicing the UK’s cycling needs.

We've come a long since our humble beginings on Kennington Road in 1921.

When we thought about how best to celebrate Evans Cycles roots as a company in its 90th year, a British-made bike, true to F.W. Evans’ ideals, seemed most appropriate. British-built and British-designed is rarer now than it was in F.W. Evans’ days, but there are still a few select cycle manufacturers in the UK that have survived the changes in manufacturing over the last few decades.

Best known for producing some great early touring bikes (like this 1939 Evans Super Continental), it was determined an F.W Evans branded tourer would be most appropriate for spearheading our 90th anniversary celebrations.

Pashley are one of our favourite cycle brands here at Evans, we love their hand-crafted quality and their second-to-none finish. Still painstakingly hand-built by their time-served craftsmen in Stratford-upon-Avon, using traditional lugged and brazed construction methods that F.W. Evans himself would recognise and approve of, the choice seemed a logical one. When Pashley agreed to build a bike for us based on their ever-popular Clubman Country model, the F.W. Evans branded 90th Anniversary bike was born.

Pashley are one of the few reamining UK bicycle manufaturers left and were chosen for their expertise in steel and traditional construction methods.

“It is a pleasure to work with Evans on this project as both our companies were founded in the Twenties by pioneers in the cycle trade.  It is their legacy that has ultimately brought us together to celebrate a magnificent Anniversary.  Congratulations!” - Pashley’s M.D, Adrian Williams

Limited to an initial batch of 26pcs with a later option to extend production to 90pcs total, each bike is individually numbered via a toptube-mounted engraved brass plaque and finished in traditional British racing green powdercoat.

We opted for a build that would have been typical for an F.W. Evans cycle in the 50s and 60s, combining old fashioned charm with new age performance. Touring and road bikes were F.W. Evan’s speciality so a wide-ranging and lightweight tourer was deemed most suitable for a celebration of Evans’ roots.

No British built bike would be complete without the ubiquitous matching Brooks saddle and bartape. Production bikes will come equipped in Henry Ford black and not the green shown here ont he sample.

Stronglight Impact 52/42/30T triple chainset matched to a rangy 11-32T 9sp cassette should provide ample range even when fully loaded. Traditional clips and leather straps are a nice bonus and testament to the close attention to detail we gave the speccing.

The mark of a legend! Reynolds' iconic 531 tubeset is used to construct the frame with investment-cast cut-away lugs, cast dropouts, mudguard eyes, bottle cage mounts and pump peg.

We didn't want this bike to be 'all-show and no-go' so we plumped for parts considered the best amongst the discerning touring circle - Dia-Compe DC750 centre-pull brake callipers, Sturmey-Archer bar end shifters and Panaracer Pasela Tourguard 32c tyres.

This is a bicycle that any of us could load up and enjoy a weekend break seeing the quiet roads of the Peak district or week-long ride among the high passes of Italy. It’s also a comfortable, high-mileage ride for the days when racing is the last thing on our minds. A unique and British made bike for all road cyclists, whatever the distance.

Available from July and in strictly limited numbers, the bike will be priced at £1645.00srp. For more info please see: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fw-evans/90th-anniversary-special-edition-touring-bike-ec029308
