A new ride location for 2014 which sees us heading just over the border into the North Wales Borderlands for our North Wales Ride It! Sportive starting from the town of Mold on Sunday 8th June. We’re based close to the Clwydian Range, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the routes offers some stunning scenery on some wonderfully remote roads with a few challenging hills thrown in for good measure.
There’s the chance to take on Bwlch Penbarra, as featured in Simon Warren’s 100 Greatest Climbs, which hits a gradient of 25% at it’s steepest as you head round the hairpin and is sure to test your legs and determination. It’s not all about climbing though, there are also some great rolling roads and fast descents including a 5km descent of The Shelf.
More details and entry links can be found at – Ride It! North Wales Sportive
You can also keep up to date with the latest event information here and via the North Wales Ride It! Facebook Event Page.
By Car – Mold is located a short distance from Chester and Wrexham and is about a 30 mile drive from the M6. For those using a sat nav the post code for the event centre is CH7 1EP.
By Train – The closest train station is Buckley which has connections to Wrexham and Liverpool. It’s around a 3 mile ride from the train station in Buckley to the event centre in Mold via the A549 and A 541.
By Bike – Unfortunately Mold isn’t on the Sustrans National Cycle Network but can be reached via some fairly quite A-roads. The Leisure Centre is located just off the B5444 Wrexham Road and on bike is best approached through the town centre via the A541 and A5119.
The event will be hosted from the Mold Leisure Centre, when you arrive please follow the parking signs and directions from our marshalls. Parking for our event will be to the rear of the building rather in the front car park.
Registration is inside the main sports hall and there will be access to changing and shower facilities if you want them before and after your ride.
Registration will be open from 8am to 10:30am but long route riders should aim to arrive and register before 9:30am. Please follow the signs for registration after you’ve arrived.
Please ensure you bring your helmet with you to registration, you will not be allowed to register without one so bringing it with you will save a trip back to your car or bike collect it.
Once you have registered and are ready to ride please head to the start area near the main entrance.
The main event centre is planned to close at 5pm although access to changing facilities and the car park will remain open until the Leisure Centre closes at 7pm.
Teas and coffee will be available to purchase before the ride, after the ride there will be a selection of snacks and hot pasta available for those that want to refuel before heading home. Our catering will close around 4pm after which only a limited choice of food will be available.
For this event we have a fully qualified local sports physio who will be offering a post ride massage service to riders. The charge for this service is £10 for 15 minutes. You can book you slot once you complete the ride.
There’s no denying that this is a tough ride, even the shorter route distances pack in plenty of climbing with all but the fun route taking in the ascent of Penbarra with it’s brutal 25% hairpin. The reward is some great scenery in some wonderfully remote countryside and hopefully a great sense of achievement once you cross the finish line.
Fun – 14 miles
Short – 30 miles with 2,775 feet of elevation gain
Medium – 60 miles with 5,178 feet of elevation gain
Long – 77 miles with 6,592 feet of elevation gain
After completing the route please head back through the finish timing point to register your finish time. If you don’t head through the timing point you won’t register a finish time and will show as a DNF when we publish the rider times.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS NOT A RACE – There are no rankings or prizes on offer, all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running popular and friendly events by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. The majority of the ride is on the public roads so please obey the Highway Code, stop at junctions where appropriate and obey any traffic lights. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. Although we have event insurance it does not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian you will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.
WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS
We’ll be keeping an eye on the weather over the coming days and whilst we are hoping for some fine and dry conditions it’s not looking too promising. Heavy rain is forecast for Saturday with Sunday being more changeable so we may get lucky.
The area is quite mountainous and as a result the weather can be very changeable, it’s often Sunny in Mold whilst it’s raining on the hill tops or over in the next valley. Even if it’s dry when you start we advise you to take a rain jacket with you on the ride.
MAPS & GPX FILES
All riders will be given a hard copy of the route map at registration. Please keep this with you, even if you’re using a GPS, as it has useful information such as emergency contact numbers and the location of the ride splits and feed stations.
You can visit the main event page now and view the routes on Garmin Connect -
Please note the routes on the event page are provisional and if necessary we may take the decision to revise them in the run up to the event so please check back here for any updates.
Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail on Thursday evening with links to the final GPX files. If you do not receive this please remember it will have been sent to the email address you used when booking the ride and do check it hasn’t been trapped in your junk emails folder. If you still don’t have them then email me on firstname.lastname@example.org I’ll check your entry and send you a copy.
If you have any queries or questions relating to the ride that aren’t covered then please email email@example.com or get in contact with us via the facebook event page.
