A new addition to our calendar for 2014 sees us head to Malton on the edge of the Howardian Hills, and a short drive from York City Centre, for our RIDE IT North Yorkshire Sportive. The routes offer some great varied cycling and stunning views from the rolling countryside of the Howardian Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, then on to some more challenging terrain in the Yorkshire Moors for riders opting for the longer courses.
For those that like to test themselves on the hills, the medium and long routes include White Horse Bank as featured in the UK Top 100 Climbs; it’s a tough but enjoyable climb that has some amazing views from the top as you past the gliders.

By Car – Malton is just off the A64 between York and Scarborough, our venue is split between Malton Leisure Centre on the B1257 as you head into Malton and Malton School which is on Middlecave Road. Parking is available at both so please follow signs and any directions from our marshalls as you approach the venue. Please be aware there is a large car event in Malton on the same day as our ride so traffic is likely to be a lot busier than usual and some road restrictions, on and off the A64, may be in place.
Parking – Parking at this venue is a bit spread out, we’ll be using some spaces in the main leisure centre car park and there are more spaces around the school side of the campus accessed from Middlecave Road. Please follow our signs and any directions from our marshalls when you arrive, wherever you park you’re only a minutes walk from the registration and start/finish area.
By Train – Malton train station is a short ride away from the venue, please check with National Rail Enquiries for train times and train connections.
By Bike – The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route, Sustrans Route 166, heads through the outskirts of Malton close to our event venue, for more information visit the Sustrans website.
The event will be hosted from a combination of Malton Leisure Centre and Malton School, both are effectively part of the same campus and there’s a short walk on a paved path across the playing field between the two.
When you arrive, follow the parking signs and directions from our marshalls. Registration and the start and finish area will be on the school side of the campus but you maybe directed to park in the Leisure Centre car park.
It’s important to remember that the registration area will be closing and locked up at 5pm so don’t leave anything in there if there’s a risk you’re not going to be back before then.
REGISTRATION & TIMINGS
Registration will be open from 8:00am to 10:15am but long route riders should aim to arrive and register before 9:30am. Please follow the signs for registration after you’ve arrived.
Please ensure you bring your helmet with you to registration, you will not be allowed to register without one so bringing it with you will save a trip back to your car or bike collect it.
Once you have registered and are ready to ride please head to the start area near the main entrance.
First riders start at 8:30am, the last start for riders on the long route is 9:45am, the last start for riders on the shorter routes is 10:30am.
There will be a time cut off at the long ride split, which is approximately 45 miles away from start. You need to pass this point before 1:30pm, if you arrive after this time you will be diverted onto the medium route.
It’s important to be aware that the event centre closes at 5pm so all riders should plan to return before then. If you start in one or the earlier start groups that should give you over 8 hours to complete the ride.
Teas, coffees and snacks will be available to purchase in the morning before your ride. After the ride there will be hot food available to purchase should you wish to refuel before your journey home.
The fun and short routes stay almost exclusively in the Howardian Hills whilst the medium and long routes head further away into the Yorkshire Moors and on to some more challenging terrain.
The approximate route distances are -
Fun – 20 miles with 1,400 feet of elevation gain
Short – 33 miles with 2,100 feet of elevation gain
Medium – 63 miles with 5,200 feet of elevation gain
Long – 82 miles with 7,100 feet of elevation gain
After completing the route please head back through the finish timing point to register your finish time before returning to your car. If you don’t head through the timing point you won’t register a finish time and will show as a DNF when we publish the rider times.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS NOT A RACE – There are no rankings or prizes on offer, all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running popular and friendly events by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. The majority of the ride is on the public roads so please obey the Highway Code, stop at junctions where appropriate and obey any traffic lights. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. Although we have event insurance it does not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian you will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.
WEATHER & ROAD CONDITIONS
The current forecast for the weekend is a bit mixed with possible thunderstorms. Please bear in mind the weather at the start in Malton can be very different from the weather up in the Yorkshire Moors so you should be prepared for changeable conditions and even if it’s a dry start, pack a lightweight jacket or gilet.
Like most areas of the UK there’s always the risk of potholes, poor surfacing or gravel especially on some of the smaller lanes. Always keep alert and if riding in a group signal any hazards to riders behind you.
We’ll be doing our final course inspection on the Saturday before the ride so will update if we find any specific areas of caution.
MAPS & GPX FILES
All riders will be given a printed copy of the route map at registration. Please keep this with you, even if you’re using a GPS, as it has useful information such as emergency contact numbers and the location of the ride splits and feed stations.
Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail by Friday evening with links to the final GPX files. If you do not receive this please remember it will have been sent to the email address you used when booking the ride and do check it hasn’t been trapped in your junk emails folder. If you still don’t have them then email me on email@example.com and I’ll check your entry and send you a copy.
