We’ve been out today putting up the Sportive routes for Sunday and, as usual, it’s a great place to ride your bike! I popped out yesterday evening for a quick MTB ride and the same goes for the off-road trails, it’s a tough area to beat for scenery! That said, it’s a tough area to ride full stop. There are some big, long hills on both days, but then you know that as you’ve signed up to a 5/5 on the difficult rating…..
So, on to the details.
PLEASE BRING YOUR HELMET TO REGISTRATION. You will not be able to register without it and you’ll have to go back to your car to retrieve it.
There is parking available on site in the marked bays. Once this is full there is additional parking around the back of the school ( We’ll put some signs up for this but the first parking is a one way system so when you pop back out onto the road turn right, at the cross roads turn right and then at the DIY shop 100mts turn right!!) If we manage to fill this then there’s the road outside.
Before I go any further I would like to point out that THIS IS NOT A RACE. You will not be given a rank and all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running a popular friendly event by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. Stop at junctions and traffic lights, and obey the highway code. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. We do not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian YOU will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.
This is in the 6th form centre, follow signs to registration.
I have popped out and the course looks dry and in good condition but it is, however, due to rain over the next few days. This shouldn’t affect the ground conditions too much as it’s never particularly muddy. This rain might make the rocky sections a bit slippery though so take care and keep that speed down!
It’s also going to be a tough course, hence only two routes. Please be cautious on those descents, they are going to be steep and technical so keep your speed and bike under control.
Keep yourselves hydrated – there will be one drink station on the short and two on the Medium ( which is the longest route) with plenty of water.
As it’s the school holidays I expect there to be a lot of walkers around so please be courteous to them all, remember they want to enjoy the countryside too and not get constantly buzzed by bikers!!
Short 16miles elevation 3000ft Drink station at 8.5miles
Medium 27 miles elevation 5100ft Drinks at 10 and 18 miles
It’s not a race!
Please give way to other trail users, walkers, horse riders etc. If you come across a Horse, please let the rider know you are there in plenty of time and follow their instructions. Remember, if you spook the horse it might hurt you or other people and you are responsible for you actions and the consequences!! Please also close all gates you might come across.
I hope you all have the day we did today, but a little bit cooler…… The roads are in ok condition but, like the rest of the country, they are prone to pot holes. Please keep your eye out for them and if you are travelling in a group, please shout out warnings to those behind. We also use small lanes, so keep your speed down and be aware that there might be cars around that bend. On larger roads please keep to single file unless it’s safe to do so.
There is a road closed sign/section that we direct you through. This will be open on Sunday and if they haven’t made enough room to let us through then there is a small detour through an estate – just follow our arrows.
Distances are approx.
Short -29miles Elevation 3200ft
Medium -49miles Elevation 5900ft
Long -74miles Elevation 10000ft
Drink stations are approximately at:-
Short, – 17miles
Medium – 17 & 42 miles
Long – 23, 43 and 68miles
Long loop cut off – 9.45 from the Start. The Medium/long loop into Hope valley and over Snakes Pass will be shut down at 1.30pm
Event centre closes at 5pm – Hot food will finish at 4pm.
This is not a race!!
Please obey the highway code, stop at junctions and only ride two abreast where it is safe to do so – not on main roads or winding country lanes where cars travelling at speed will not be able to see you and stop!!!! If you cause and accident, you are responsible for the consequences and any costs.
YOU’LL RECEIVE A HARD COPY OF THE MAPS AT REGISTRATION.
Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail on Thursday afternoon around 6pm that has links to the GPX files and a guide to show you have to view them interactively. If you have not received this by 7pm tonight please check you junk folder, old accounts, your partners email if they booked and make sure you check the address you booked with! These are all common causes for not getting the mail. If you still don’t have them then email me on firstname.lastname@example.org I’ll check your entry and send you a copy.
See you all there!
