Wow, what a weekend! Last year the weather played up with the MTB ride, this year it was the roadies turn. Well done to everyone who came along and rode either day, but I think I need to make a special mention to all the 120 odd riders on the Sportive who arrived in the rain, rode in the wind and rain, then left in the rain. Well done guys – sorry I had to cut the routes down but I think everyone who did ride has agreed it was the right decision.

So, onto the times. I don’t think there are going to be any King of the Mountain times on Strava for Crag Vale….

Update 5.30pm Saturday

Hi All.

Right, that weather doesn’t seem to be playing ball, it looks like it’s going to get wet and windy from around 9 -9.30am. As I’m going out at around 3-4am I’m not going to get a feel for what’s coming later so there is no point in me posting up at 6am.

What we have decided to do is to put on the short route which is 24 miles. This is mainly in the valleys until you climb up Crag Vale so there will hopefully only be one exposed section that you do earlier in the day. From here it’s one descent into Rochdale. If you fancy doing more then you can reverse the route ( Which the Long route did anyway ) back down Crag Vale and into the Valleys again. I think this’ll give you about 40miles riding which should be enough!!!

If possible we’ll get you out earlier at 8.00am and we’ll open registration at about 7.30am – just bear with us if we are a little behind on these timescales.

A miracle could always happen and it could be a bright, sunny day. In this case we’ll open up the top loop that would have been the full route, but this decision will be made at the drink station at the top of Crag Vale. If we don’t open it, please do not ride it anyway, all the arrows will be removed and there will be no support available if you get into difficulties.

Update 5.45 Friday

Hi All. We have updated the GPX/TCX files a little bit. The MTB TCX files have been completely reloaded, the Garmin 800/810 folder now contains the Road routes. The only action you need to take is to reload the Medium MTB TCX if you were one of the 7 people who downloaded it.

Todays MTB – crossed fingers for a dry day tomorrow!!

INFORMATION FOR THE WEEKEND – IMPORTANT.

We put out the Sportive route today and it was a bit of a mixed bag weather wise. I did the long loop from the top of Crag Vale, so that was 5.5miles straight down from cold! The sun came out though so it ended up as a pleasant ride. As I pulled up to the van it started to rain and then sleet and as I sat in the warm van my thoughts were with Keith and Mike still setting out the course :-) 10minutes late it had stopped raining and the sun was out!!

MTB routes will be put out tomorrow, but looking at them, and past experience means that we are pretty confident they are going to be ridable. It’s generally pretty good, solid trails around here. That’s nor to say they wont be wet…….

 

Please BRING YOUR HELMET TO REGISTRATION You will not be allowed to register without one and will have to return to your car.

Weather

Looking  at the forecast for the coming days I think it’s a fair bet that it’s going to be wet. And possibly windy. To be honest, I can’t see this affecting the MTB on SAturday too much as riders tend to be going slower and the routes are in valleys. With the Sportive, here’s what will happen. I pre-drive the course from 3am on Sunday to make sure the signs are in place. This will give me an idea of the weather on the course. If it is horrendous and I think it will be dangerous to hold the event I will cancel it. In this case I will post up here and on the Facebook event page by 6am. It there is nothing by that time then assume the event will be gong ahead. Obviously you are going to be out there for a long time and weather changes. If it changes during the day we might need to close down loops for safety reasons – in this case, please follow the signage or instructions of marshals.

Event Centre

Since last year a whole new school has been built!! If you have come to this event before then please do not go to the old entrance. There is now twice as much parking on site and registration can be found at the end of the parking area around the back of the school.

Toilets/changing/showers

There is plenty of the above – just follow signs ( you have to go past the outside entrance to registration and enter the school by an entrance a bit further along) As mentioned above, it’s a new school and sparkling clean. Please do not take dirty/muddy clothing/shoes/camelbacks into the building. Strip off as much as possible by your car and help us keep coming back by not trashing the place :-)

 

Parking

There is limited parking on site. Once this is full please park CONSIDERATELY on the local roads. We have kept the number of entries low so there should be no problems with space. It’s also likely to be early – so please keep your volume down to allow people to enjoy their Saturday or Sunday morning lie-in.

Registration

Follow signs to registration which is around the back of the school

Food

There will be hot food available until 4pm each day. Aftert this we will endeavour to have food available but please do not expect a full spread.

 

 

Before I go any further I would like to point out that THIS IS NOT A RACE. You will not be given a rank and all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running a popular friendly event by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. Stop at junctions and traffic lights, and obey the highway code. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. We do not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian YOU will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.

 

MTB

We have not ridden the route as yet – I’m a bit unsure about the conditions on all of the route so we will post up the GPX files tomorrow once we have put up the course and know if there are any changes.

Horses  If you meet ANY horses on the trails and you are approaching from behind please call out “Hello” some distance back to indicate you are approaching. Wait for the rider to ackowledge you and pass slow and wide. If you are asked to wait or it’s obviously not safe to do so, please wait until you are told it’s ok to pass. Please also be aware that there might be horses coming up the trail and keep your speed under control. This way we can all enjoy the sunshine and countryside. Remember, if you spook the horse it might hurt you or other people and you are responsible for you actions and the consequences!!

Please also close all gates you might come across.

Bike Wash.

We are struggling to find an outside tap on the new school! We will do our best but I’m not promising anything

 

Distances

Short – 14miles elevation 2000ft, drink station 7miles

Medium – 22miles, elevation 3600ft Drink stations at 7 and 12miles

Long – 29miles. elevation 4400ft, Drink Stations at 7, 12 and 23miles

 

SPORTIVE

It’s Wet out there! There is a bit of leaf cover and debris on the roads, especially near farms where tractors have been dragging mud out onto the tarmac.If there are standing puddles, go carefully as the roads are prone to pot holes. Please keep your eye out for them and if you are travelling in a group, please shout out warnings to those behind. Make sure you have the ability to change a couple of punctures, especially if you are running  lightweight skinny tyres.( PLEASE, PLEASE don’t use skinny, lightweight tyres or Tubs.) A van can be sent out to your aid, but in might be over an hour to get to you depending upon where you and it are. We use small lanes, so keep your speed down and be aware that there might be cars around that bend. On larger roads please keep to single file unless it’s safe to do so.

Short, – 19miles

Medium -  19 and 44miles

Long – 19 and 44miles

Long loop cut off – 1pm (44miles in)

Event centre closes at 5pm – Gate will be locked.

 

This is not a race!!

Please obey the highway code, stop at junctions and only ride two abreast where it is safe to do so – not on main roads or winding country lanes where cars travelling at speed will not be able to see you and stop!!!! If you cause and accident, you are responsible for the consequences and any costs. Horses.  If there are any horses on the road, please slow down and shout out “Hello” with good warning – then wait until you are told it is safe to pass.

GPX files

Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail on Thursday afternoon around 6pm that has links to the GPX files and a guide to show you have to view them interactively. If you have not received this by 7pm tonight please check you junk folder, old accounts, your partners email if they booked and make sure you check the address you booked with! These are all common causes for not getting the mail. If you still don’t have them then email me on dean.stacey@evanscycles.com I’ll check your entry and send you a copy. I have to change the MTB routes so there will be a delay in getting these produced, they should be available tomorrow.
