MTB update. 5.40pm

We’ve had a few issues out there today with access ( I won’t go into it here ) but have managed to get a route in for every one. The mileages are up a bit on our usual distances but there are two long sections of road so you’ll get a decent amount of off road. Please see the section below for distances/feed stations. Trail conditions are generally OK ( Except for “The Bog” after the quarry….)

Hi All

We’re up in Tredegar puting up this weekends courses. Today was the Sportive and I got to do the SHort route, which weighs in at 33miles. It was due to rain this morning and bang on the first pedal stroke the drizzle set in. It wasn’t too damp, and shouldn’t be wet at the weekend when you can borrow some Gore clothing to try out, so I didn’t get too wet. The first couple of miles weave through the Tredegar burbs before heading out into the Breacons proper. WIth a wind at my back it was easy going and torwards the top the sun started to poke through. This had the effect of producing a stunning rainbow – queue a photo session.

 

 

 

 

A fantastic descent brings you into Bwelch and the Medium route split. Carrying along the Short you reach the White Hart Inn at Talybont on Usk and the drink station. I’ve know Owen, the landlord, for many years but not seen him for about 6, so I stopped in for a chat. They are really cycling friendly and if it’s cold might have the fire going, so if you fancy a pint pop in  ( Please do not eat your/our food inside) A sprint down the Talybont valley brings you to the last major climb, starting at the 20% sign. Keep going until the last struggle around a left hand bend and some breath, enjoy the view and then enjoy the descent. The final few miles bring you back to Tredegar and some refreshmants at the centre.

We are putting out the MTB tomorrow so I can’t give current conditions but it’s a real mountain setting with loads of views, some decent descents and some singletrack around the park to finish with ( Keith and Mike have been out there strimming :-) ) The distances are up a bit, but there is quite a long road section to start with to get you some elevation. I will post GPX files tomorrow night.

PLEASE BRING YOUR HELMET TO REGISTRATION. You will not be able to register without it and you’ll have to go back to your car to retrieve it.

 

Parking

Please use the OVERFLOW parking spaces on the right as you turn into the park then walk or ride to the vistitor centre. Follow the marshals instructions.

Registration

At the visitor centre use the entrance on the left to register. When you are ready to ride go to the marquee to the left of the centre.

Toilets

There will be toilets in the building along with showers

 

Before I go any further I would like to point out that THIS IS NOT A RACE. You will not be given a rank and all times will be displayed in a non-sortable format in rider number order. Please help us to continue running a popular friendly event by not riding in such a way to obstruct the road and upset other users. Stop at junctions and traffic lights, and obey the highway code. Do not ride at silly speeds around blind bends or on steep descents. We do not insure you for your actions so if you do hit a car or pedestrian YOU will be responsible for any damages caused by your riding.

 

MTB

I expect there to be a some walkers around so please be courteous to them all, remember they want to enjoy the countryside too and not get constantly buzzed by bikers!!

Horses  If you meet ANY horses on the trails and you are approaching from behind please call out “Hello” some distance back to indicate you are approaching. Wait for the rider to ackowledge you and pass slow and wide. If you are asked to wait or it’s obviously not safe to do so, please wait until you are told it’s ok to pass. Please also be aware that there might be horses coming up the trail and keep your speed under control. This way we can all enjoy the sunshine and countryside. Remember, if you spook the horse it might hurt you or other people and you are responsible for you actions and the consequences!!

Please also close all gates you might come across.

Short – 19miles elevation 2000ft, drink station 9.5miles

Medium – 28miles, elavation 3300ft, Drink stations at 12 and 19miles

Long – 34miles, elavation 4300ft, Drink stations at 17 and 26miles

 

SPORTIVE

I hope you all have a better day than we did today, I thonk the forecast is looking good….  The roads are in ok condition but, like the rest of the country, they are prone to pot holes. Please keep your eye out for them and if you are travelling in a group, please shout out warnings to those behind. We also use small lanes, so keep your speed down and be aware that there might be cars around that bend. On larger roads please keep to single file unless it’s safe to do so.

Distances are approx.

Short -33miles  Elevation 4000ft

Medium -49miles Elevation 5400ft

Long -76miles Elevation 7800ft

Drink stations are approximately at:-

Short, – 15miles

Medium - 30 miles

Long – 29 and 57miles

Long loop cut off - 11am (10 miles in)

Event centre closes at 5pm – Gate will be locked.

 

This is not a race!!

Please obey the highway code, stop at junctions and only ride two abreast where it is safe to do so – not on main roads or winding country lanes where cars travelling at speed will not be able to see you and stop!!!! If you cause and accident, you are responsible for the consequences and any costs. Horses.  If there are any horses on the road, please slow down and shout out “Hello” with good warning – then wait until you are told it is safe to pass.

GPX files

Everyone who has pre-entered will receive a pre-event mail on Thursday afternoon around 6pm that has links to the GPX files and a guide to show you have to view them interactively. If you have not received this by 7pm tonight please check you junk folder, old accounts, your partners email if they booked and make sure you check the address you booked with! These are all common causes for not getting the mail. If you still don’t have them then email me on dean.stacey@evanscycles.com I’ll check your entry and send you a copy. I have to change the MTB routes so there will be a delay in getting these produced, they should be available tomorrow.
