Very soon now I will be heading out on my new Colnago road bike for the biggest road ride of my life – Land’s End to John O Groats, UK.  Lycra will be squeezed into, sunscreen (optimistically) applied, butt cream slathered on and gears adjusted in anticipation of the ride. Insanity. I know..  I think I got myself into this ride after a fateful night at the local pub involving a few too many ciders and not enough clear thinking. However, saying that I am sure great things have been achieved from nights like these haven’t they?…

My ride won’t be a lonely affair, approximately 10 others cyclists from local cycling clubs have also signed up for the challenge and thankfully we have a support vehicle to make sure we are fed and looked after along the way.  The ride will begin at Lands End and over 10 days we will haul ourselves up the west coast of the UK, through Cornwall, Bristol, past Wales, sideswipe the Lakes District, past Carlisle into Scotland,  Fort William and hopefully end up at John O Groats by the 30th May.  Accommodation along the way will be Hostels and various B & B’s so thankfully no deflated air mattress at 1am or putting up tents by torchlight this time round.  For me, the main motivation for doing this ride is the mental and physical challenge of having never ridden such massive distances before with the aim of taking on bigger rides in the future. Well we’ll see…

So here’s for a great ride, some added fitness, friendship and probably a saddle sore or two!  When the endorphins and local cider are flowing in the small Scottish pub in 10 days time, another crazy idea will be agreed on, something along the lines of…’So, how about a ride back to Australia then?’
