I was initially after a touring bike, but after chatting to Sean in the Reading branch decided to try this bike instead. After some confusion over whether the bike could accommodate mudguards and a rack (it definitely can – Evans fitted them) I took for a test ride and purchased it. Having been used to a triple chainset, I wasn’t sure how I’d get on with the compact (I’m a not-very-fit middle aged lady) but I took the bike to the Surrey Hills last weekend and sailed up Box Hill and managed Leith Hill with a short stop for a breather. (Okay 2 stops, but that was the engine rather than the bike…). On the flat and sensible gradient hills, it’s much quicker than my old bike (a flat handlebar hybrid/road bike) – I was surprised to find I’m averaging 3mph faster. I reckon changing the tyres for slicks would let it fly. I’m new to drop handlebars, but have got used to the shifters very easily. I’m experiencing a little stiffness in my shoulders, but think this is down to the different position and will ease after a few more rides. Minor niggles – the diddy triangle on between the crossbar and vertical makes the fit on my bike rack (Saris Bones) a bit skewiff. My standard light fitting doesn’t fit on the handlebar, so will need to sort something out before the autumn. Overall, very pleased with the bike – it’s great for my commute to work through the woods, well suited for weekend touring, and quick enough to keep up on a road ride. I feel tempted to try a proper cyclocross event :)
