Be prepared for Autumn and get your bike serviced. Prevention is better than cure!

Clean and lubricate your drivetrain regularly. In wet weather I use the Park Chain Gang chain cleaning system and Finish Line Cross Country lube. Apply the lube carefully on the inside of a dry chain where it touches the cog teeth – it’ll avoid it picking up excess dirt and will keep your chain running sweetly.

Punctures happen more often in wet weather. One way to avoid them is to fit more puncture-resistant tyres. Continental GP 4 Seasons are amazing on road bikes, and Specialized and Schwalbe both have good options.

 

Keep your tyres inflated to the correct pressure. It will make your ride faster, much more fun and will also reduce your puncture rate. Just look on the side of your tyre to find out what this should be.

Clean your bike…Yes, it’s boring but doing it after every wet/muddy Autumnal ride will keep you on top of it. Use a specific bike cleaner rather than washing up liquid to protect your paintwork. I find Fenwicks Bike Cleaner or Muc-Off does the trick for me.

 

Check your brake pads for wear and replace if needed. They take more of a hammering in Autumn/Winter and it’s always nice to be able to stop in a hurry. If your brake pads are wearing thin, you can buy new ones from us and fit them yourself for under £5 – and you can also have them fitted at one of our workshops.

Be prepared for mechanical problems whilst riding by carrying a multi-tool, spare inner tube, tyre levers and mini pump. Things will go wrong and getting caught in the rain with a broken bike is not a good look.

 

Measure your chain to check if it needs replacing. You can get a chain checker tool for very little. Chains wear out faster in bad weather and if you don’t replace it, more expensive items like cassettes and chain rings will need replacing too.

 

Check your cables for damage or stickiness in the brakes or gears. Rain, grit and mud wears them out quickly and it’s worth investing in a good set to keep everything working smoothly. When cables do begin to wear out, you can buy new ones from us to fit yourself, or you can bring your bike to one of our workshops, where we can replace them for you.
